Thanksgiving is an American holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November each year that commemorates a harvest festival celebrated by the North American Pilgrims in 1621 to exchange thanksgiving with the Native American Indian’s who owned the land. This year, Thanksgiving takes place on Thursday 24th November and while here in Australia we don’t celebrate the holiday, there is definitely something that can be learned here by giving thanks to those who have helped you in your life. This is where Friendsgiving comes in. Friendsgiving first popped up online in 2009 and takes place on the 27th of November, right around the time of Thanksgiving, as an alternative holiday to spend in celebration of the loved ones you have chosen.

Thanksgiving is very focused on being a family based holiday, and while friends are included in many circles it is generally a gathering that is similar to Christmas – this means that it can be stressful or overwhelming, especially when it comes to family dramas, expectations and necessities.

Your friends are your friends for a reason. They don’t need to know about your five year plan because they are already aware of what trajectory you are on. They’re not going to ask you when you plan on having babies or why you don’t have a husband unless it’s a genuine conversation. This means that any time you get together, it’s going to be a good time because you are all genuinely involved in each other’s lives, so why not have a good reason to get together and share some food and wine? Friendsgiving is a good excuse for that!

So follow in a similar vein of tradition as Thanksgiving and host yourself a meal. Cook a turkey, a chicken or a vegan equivalent, serve potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and pie. Drink wine or even crack open a beer. No matter how you celebrate it just remember to thank your friends for all of their love and support and for being there for you.

Sounds like a pretty good reason to throw a party to me!
