I first met David and Belle of We Are Origami Photography via email discussing approvals for an editorial that my friend was featured in and discovered with delight that they were the chosen photographers for my friend’s big day.
When we met in person at my friend’s wedding they were into the full swing of their work and I was blown away by their amazing good-natured attitudes and positivity. Taking bridal portraits had never been more fun with their creative and spontaneous ideas that turned the subsequent photos into some of the best work I have ever seen!
It is an absolute delight to introduce to you the next People Behind The Party … We Are Origami Photography.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
We’re David + Belle.
Two happy, creative, good-natured, adventurous people who met and shared a wonderful connection. Best friends. Soul mates. Soon-to-be husband + wife.
We both share a dear passion for capturing naturally beautiful moments that unfold during that extra special time in your life, the genuine smiles and laughter shared, the real emotions felt, and amazing scenery experienced. Both avid travellers, we love the finer little details and we love shooting with soft, natural light.
What does We Are Origami Photography do for the event industry?
We are wedding portrait and editorial photographers, based in Sydney Australia. We both share a dear passion for film + digital photography and approach all our weddings and portrait sessions in an honest, fun and unique way that combines documentary and fine art styles. Some people call us hybrid photographers.
How did you first get involved in photography?
We first got involved in photography about five years ago and have been professional photographers for about three years now. We started out shooting a little bit of everything but as time passed, our focus and passion started to steer us towards weddings and editorials.
What is your favourite part about photographing an event?
We started photographing a bit of fashion sessions before we start We Are Origami Photography and we love it. We still shoot these sorts of sessions, under the disguise of Bridal Editorials, but we are loving weddings more and more. We are very into editorial work at the moment, and we’re getting more and more work from magazines – and it’s been so much fun.
With family sessions – we think these are equally as important as weddings. The years pass us by so fast and one should really document their family and children at least every year. You don’t want to regret not doing enough with photos.
What has been your favourite event or project that you have worked on?
It’s really difficult to pinpoint a favourite event as every wedding we shot have been really unique + fun! We are really lucky (*knock on wood*) that we have had awesome awesome couples who really understand our style and let us run amok and be creative on the day!
We must say we do LOVE editorial work as we have full control of what we want to produce! And it’s also super pretty and it’s little things like these that makes our world go round and round.
What inspires you?
In our own time, we adore spending time together fulfilling our creative desires, planning exciting new places to go, treasuring life’s simple moments, and just enjoying being in each other’s company. Both eager travellers, we have a real soft spot for secluded estates, vineyards, lush green fields, gardens and incredible scenery. We also have a secret obsession with shooting with soft natural light, which you may recognise in many of our images.
We love shooting with both film and digital on your big day as it inspires us to bring different and unique aspects to our work. While digital is great for capturing on-the-fly moments and incredible night photography, film is in a class of its own when it comes to crafting fine art pieces. Film brings a soft, elegant and timeless feel with beautiful gentle tones, which we are distinctly known for – this is our signature style.
What’s in the future for We Are Origami Photography?
We look forward to the day where a majority of our work will be captured purely on film, simply because we just the love of the innocent and organic look of it all. The colours are also to die for!
