Everybody loves the idea of giving out favours in the form of “Make Your Own Cakes” in a jar. This is basically when you put all the dry ingredients you would need to bake a cake (or cookies or any other sweet treat) into layers in a cute little seal top jar. Then you can add a cute tag to it, a couple of additional decorations, and give them out to your guests as they leave. That way they have all the ingredients necessary to put together their own little piece of your party at their own home!
Well this idea was so popular that it paved the way for the next level of bonbonnieres for your guests – and that was to actually MAKE the cake in the jar and give it to the guests fully formed! It was an interesting take on the idea, and it means you have the additional fun of making it as well. They work well for any theme, depending on the type of cake you make, and the possibilities are almost endless!
I found some amazing ideas on the web about different types of cakes and styles you can implement to make your cake in a jar. I will be sharing them with you as I go, but to get you in the mood I present to you this amazing recipe from Glorious Treats.

This idea was a little bit more simple than some of the other recipes I will share with you and didn’t involve actually making the cake IN the jar, but still worked for the same purpose.
Basicially, the cake part was just normal Vanilla Cupcake mix that you can buy from your local grocers. For each jar (and the jars were decorated with the cute purple lid and purple and white striped bakers twine) two cupcakes fit comfortably on top of each other and were layered with Blackberry Buttercream between them. You can use any type of berry you would like, but just don’t forget to add a little whole piece on top for that extra special surprise when your guests take the lid off!
This delicious frosting is a perfect way to use fresh summer berries!
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) butter (still cool)
8 oz. (1 block) cream cheese (directly from fridge)
4 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
3 Tablespoons blackberry puree (from about 1/2 cup fresh blackberries)
1. In the bowl of a large electric mixer, beat the butter until smooth.
2. Add the cream cheese, and beat further until the butter and cream cheese are fully incorporated and smooth.
3. With the mixer on low, add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time.
4. Add vanilla.
5. Again, with the mixer on low, add the blackberry puree, one tablespoon at a time.
6. Continue beating, increasing speed to medium for about 30 seconds.
7. If the frosting is on the soft side put the whole bowl of finished frosting in the refrigerator for about 1 hour to help the frosting firm up. If needed, you could add an additional cup of powdered sugar.
Once the frosting and the cupcakes are made, layer one piece of cupcake into the jar and then pipe in some frosting. Repeat the process and finish with a fresh berry, Yum! Perfect gifts to give to your friends and family!
